We the people of St. Vincent de Paul Church see ourselves as a congregation of believers among whom Jesus is living. We do what we believe we are called to do, and we educate ourselves to proclaim our commitment to build, strengthen, and enliven our parish community. We strive towards the goal of making our witness more constant and more credible by our actions, and to devote ourselves to serving one another and all others in our community as did our patron, St. Vincent de Paul.
St. Vincent de Paul's Catholic Church was incorporated on June 6, 1894, after a committee of eight local residents asked Bishop Winand Wigger to form a parish to serve all the Catholic residents and children of uptown Bayonne, regardless of nationality. The first lots on Avenue C on which our beautiful church sits today were purchased immediately. These eight founders were the first of many thousands of men, women and children who for more than 125 years have lived our Parish Mission Statement, working to serve God and neighbor, a rich history which we parishoners continue to build day by day. Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, S.C. (1901-1927) was a native Bayonnite who, with her family, moved from another part of the city to live on East 41st. Street, in St. Vincent's parish, in the 1910's. She worked in our rectory, sang in our choir, taught religious education, and graduated Bayonne High School as salutatorian in 1917. She professed her vows as a Sister of Charity in 1925, and died in 1927. She was elevated to Blessed in 2014, the last step before full sainthood. You can read about her life on Wikipedia, or ask the parish staff how to find out more about her. How blessed by God we are in this parish, and in the whole City of Bayonne, to have a 20th Century example of how to live an ordinary modern life with extraordinary holliness. Blessed Miriam Teresa, pary for us!
